Film and TV Thread Recommendations

I generally avoid period dramas too but I'll be watching The Favourite. I've seen, and I'm taking a guess at the spelling here, Yorgos Lanthemos' other films and they're kind of great, in their own weird way.



I'm going to miss the old film thread. I was still planning to watch a few of the foreign films from the early pages and often used it to look things up when trying to remember the name of some obscure film I'd seen 

Captain Fantastic for about the 5th time, love this film cause it makes you think about every perspective. 8/10

I didn't realise non-English language films were eligible for the main Oscars either. It's kind of weird that they'd have a best foreign language section seeing as they are, or that they've consistently ignored great foreign films and shoe horned them into the foreign language section.

On to other things, I just googled Yorgos Lantimos and it turns out I've only seen two other films he's made, The Lobster and The Killing of a Sacred Deer. I like those films, must try and watch some others.

This week I've seen Hot Air and Toy Story 4.

I'm not sure if Hot Air was any good or not because I found Steve Coogan's American accent too offputting. Especially when it came out that his character had grown up in the US so there wasn't an excuse that he had a different accent to everyone around him including his sister.

Toy Story seemed alright although I slept through some of it.

Audition. Fuck knows if I've got any idea what that was all about.

Birds of Prey - Wasn't as bad as i thought it would be, especially after how poor Suicide Squad was. Some good action, some amusing lines, lots and lots of man-hating Worth a watch. 6/10

6 Underground - Michael Bay explosion-fest. A billionaire fakes his death and recruits 5 others so that they can take down a vicious dictator without any of the red tape and authorisations that you need in say the CIA or the military. It's basically an excuse for several action set pieces which are done very well but often don't make much sense (for example they lose the helicopter following them by driving in and out of a museum?). Not bad if you leave your brain at the door. 5/10

Diego Maradona - Documentary movie mainly focusing on his time in Italy. It's very pro-Diego as you can imagine, and is very much laying the blame for his vilification and downfall on everyone but him. Yes he was the one who snorted all that coke but it was everyone in Naples calling him a God that led him to it - that sort of thing. The Hand Of God incident is mentioned but quickly forgotten without much in the way of finger pointing. Interesting story though and the Italians do not come out of it looking good at all. 7/10

I believe 'End of Watch' and 'The Hunt' were Vandelay recommendations   I downloaded Train to Busan a few times but the subtitles always seemed a bit suspect so I left it. I might have another go...

I felt the same about Triple 9. It was like all the ingredients for a good crime film were in place but the end result fell totally flat. 

I saw a couple of episodes of Friends the other day and did not like it at all. I remember watching it in its day and finding it reasonably enjoyable but I found it almost unwatchable now. Everyone and everything in it is just so irritating and unlikable, even the studio audience was annoying. Has it just dated badly or was it always actually a bit crap and I just didn't realise?

I'm not really watching live TV so I was wondering what you were on about there, thinking this is the wrong thread. I still wouldn't have watched it if I knew it was on. What did Liz have to say?

Spiderman, far from home. I'm not generally a fan of superhero films but I enjoyed this. 7/10.
