The Favourite. I generally hate period dramas but when they're done as comedies I like 'em. This one wasn't as good as The Death of Stalin but not too shabby. 7/10.

Bored To Death, American comedy which is normally terrible but this show had me laughing out load, each season gets better.

I generally avoid period dramas too but I'll be watching The Favourite. I've seen, and I'm taking a guess at the spelling here, Yorgos Lanthemos' other films and they're kind of great, in their own weird way. I'm going to miss the old film thread. I was still planning to watch a few of the foreign films from the early pages and often used it to look things up when trying to remember the name of some obscure film I'd seen

King Gary - all episodes on BBC I player
Really funny and best thing I have seen on tv for ages with Tom Davis brilliant in it. The second episode with the kids football was a little bit too close to home for me though running a kids team 😂
9/10

Captain Fantastic for about the 5th time, love this film cause it makes you think about every perspective. 8/10

I saw some terrible reviews somewhere for King Gary so had avoided it but I might give it a go. Anyway, I've got something to say about The Oscars and it's this..... I've never taken a lot of notice of The Oscars but I see the Korean film Parasite won the best film award. Now, I'd always assumed non-English language films weren't eligible, hence the 'best foreign film' category, but it seems they were. So all those previous years when they'd announce the years 'best' six films and they'd all just happen to be American, or occasionally English, year after year, everyone just thought that was a coincidence? Again and again. Doesn't this strike anyone as bit mental? People regularly point out the lack of black actors or female directors yet every year the fact the 'best' six films are American slipped by without comment. Imagine if each season when the nominations for the Ballon d'Or came out it was always, without fail, six Frenchmen

I didn't realise non-English language films were eligible for the main Oscars either. It's kind of weird that they'd have a best foreign language section seeing as they are, or that they've consistently ignored great foreign films and shoe horned them into the foreign language section.
On to other things, I just googled Yorgos Lantimos and it turns out I've only seen two other films he's made, The Lobster and The Killing of a Sacred Deer. I like those films, must try and watch some others.
This week I've seen Hot Air and Toy Story 4.
I'm not sure if Hot Air was any good or not because I found Steve Coogan's American accent too offputting. Especially when it came out that his character had grown up in the US so there wasn't an excuse that he had a different accent to everyone around him including his sister.
Toy Story seemed alright although I slept through some of it.

I've seen those two plus Alps and Dogtooth. I should warn you everything before 'The Lobster' is in Greek Does anyone watch Inside Number 9? I don't think I ever saw it mentioned. I've just started on the new series, the first one is football based.....

Audition. Fuck knows if I've got any idea what that was all about. End of Watch. Pretty good police drama kind of thing.
The Hunt. Really good Swedish film, I'd say I enjoyed it but it was a bit depressing.
Last Train to Bursan. Great Korean zombie film.
Parasite. I liked it, unusually for a foreign film I'm about the last person to see it. Edit, after I slept on it I got it properly. Absolutely brilliant take on society and its structure. When I watched it I couldn't really get why it was the Oscar winner but I do my best thinking when I'm asleep.
Also watching Curb, classic tele.

The Big Sleep - Classic Bogey PI film from the 40's. Great stuff even if i did need to read the wikipedia plot entry to work out what was going on (apparently the director preferred everyone to enjoy watching the film than it necessarily make sense). 7/10
Triple 9 - Heist movie. It was alright but i'm sure the makers thought it was cleverer than it actually was. The problem is that all the characters are pretty much scumbags, there isn't really anyone to root for. It was entertaining enough while watching it but left me feeling a bit flat at the end. 5/10
T2: Trainspotting - Sequel to the classic original. I was quite disappointed with this, mainly because the first was told in such a unique way, i still remember some of the visuals like the dead baby crawling across the ceiling, the stretched room, the buried sequence. This was just a bog standard movie with the same characters. 6/10
Cats - What.The.Fuck.! 1/10
On the TV front, Westworld season 3 started back this week. Looking forward to that, rewatched seasons 1 and 2 to remind me what was happening, they are just as good second time around.

Birds of Prey - Wasn't as bad as i thought it would be, especially after how poor Suicide Squad was. Some good action, some amusing lines, lots and lots of man-hating Worth a watch. 6/10 6 Underground - Michael Bay explosion-fest. A billionaire fakes his death and recruits 5 others so that they can take down a vicious dictator without any of the red tape and authorisations that you need in say the CIA or the military. It's basically an excuse for several action set pieces which are done very well but often don't make much sense (for example they lose the helicopter following them by driving in and out of a museum?). Not bad if you leave your brain at the door. 5/10 Diego Maradona - Documentary movie mainly focusing on his time in Italy. It's very pro-Diego as you can imagine, and is very much laying the blame for his vilification and downfall on everyone but him. Yes he was the one who snorted all that coke but it was everyone in Naples calling him a God that led him to it - that sort of thing. The Hand Of God incident is mentioned but quickly forgotten without much in the way of finger pointing. Interesting story though and the Italians do not come out of it looking good at all. 7/10

Doctor Sleep. Absolutely terrible, an abomination. Think of it as a horror film that is as scary as a king charles spaniel, rubbish effects, crap story, useless characters bookended by references by The Shining that only serve to make you realise how bad this film is. 1/10. My son scored it 0.5/10.

I believe 'End of Watch' and 'The Hunt' were Vandelay recommendations I downloaded Train to Busan a few times but the subtitles always seemed a bit suspect so I left it. I might have another go... I felt the same about Triple 9. It was like all the ingredients for a good crime film were in place but the end result fell totally flat. I saw a couple of episodes of Friends the other day and did not like it at all. I remember watching it in its day and finding it reasonably enjoyable but I found it almost unwatchable now. Everyone and everything in it is just so irritating and unlikable, even the studio audience was annoying. Has it just dated badly or was it always actually a bit crap and I just didn't realise?

I never liked Friends. It was the programme where everyone was laughing in the room but me. Just didn't get it.
I've downloaded a shitload of films for the lockdown. I'll get back with what's worth watching.

Jojo Rabbit. By the same fella who made What we do in the shadows and Hunt for the Wilderpeople. I'm going to go 10/10. Brilliant from start to finish.
Knives Out, a bit like a modern film version of Columbo. I enjoyed it, 8/10.
The Gentleman. Drug dealer / gangster type of deal. 7.5/10.

The Queen really is terrible at public speaking. I know she's working with very weak material but with a whole year between performances and about 80 years of experience you'd think she'd manage a bit better than that. I can understand if someone's nervous or awkward or just not very eloquent but she comes across like a robot trying to pass themselves off and human and not quite getting away with it. Poor.

I'm not really watching live TV so I was wondering what you were on about there, thinking this is the wrong thread. I still wouldn't have watched it if I knew it was on. What did Liz have to say?
Spiderman, far from home. I'm not generally a fan of superhero films but I enjoyed this. 7/10.

I didn't intend to watch it but, despite a lack of sporting content, it came on Sky sports News which I have a kind of default channel for when I'm not really watching anything. Personally, if I am to receive a 'we're all this together' type speech I'd rather it didn't come from someone spending the lockdown in one of their many palaces, but there you go....
I haven't watched any films in ages. It's been so long I don't even recognise what half of the things I've downloaded are so I might go through a few mystery titles in the next few days and report back....

I watched the new Guy Ritchie movie "The Gentlemen" the other night. Typical Ritchie movie in the style of Lock Stock and Snatch, but done a little better. Worth a watch, just for the brilliant Colin Farrell. 7/10
