Chris Wood would be a decent upgrade over Surridge. Looks like we're being limited by FFP so it's slim pickings now until the summer.

So a loan till the end of the season for Chris wood looks like it is gathering pace and we are also said to be front runners to sign arnaut danjuma who has apparently held talks directly with cooper.
Wood I guess would add to the physical presence and he has a good work ethic. He has shown he can find the back of the net but not sure how easily he would fit into the way we play with 3 Interchanging forwards.
Liked danjuma when he was at Bournemouth and he obviously did well for himself moving to Villarreal. Not seen much of him since going there but heard he's been fairly successful and would fit into the front 3 system.

Chris Wood did OK at Burnley where they played a more direct game, but at Newcastle he has been a flop. 19 starts and 16 sub appearances for the return of 4 goals. I don't think he'd fit into the system that Cooper plays.

Mate of mine who is a Newcastle fan telling me Chris wood deal is agreed and there is an obligation to buy if he hits certain triggers within the deal... Hope it ain't too much seen as though he only went for £25m to Newcastle last year, but I guess that was a price worth paying to take burnleys focal point off them and keep them up condemning Burnley to relegation.

Seen sky sports have broke the news now too. He will offer a physical threat, bring players into the game and he can obviously finish as he has been pretty much a proven striker throughout his career at Leeds and Burnley. Came in and did a job helping keep Newcastle up last season, will hopefully do the same for us. Apparently grafts his arse off too which cooper will be looking to do and I can see him being committed to the cause.

Okay so more news about the Chris wood deal has come out..yes it is a loan with an obligation to buy if the criteria is met ( I'm guessing appearances and staying up) and that amount is believed to be around £15m. Feels like too much for me for a 31 year old with no resale value. If he is a massive factor in us staying up then I guess it's a price worth paying. I take it awoniyi will be out for some time if we are prepared to spend £15m on a 31 year old. And I think they have deliberately gone for an experienced proven prem striker so that he doesn't need any time to adjust etc and can pretty much come straight into the team and help towards our survival

Good signing for all the reasons mentioned... target man, grafter, 1 in 2.5 out and out striker, loads of PL experience. Different type of player to Awoniyi so wont replace him. Can see him coming on later in the game to help us protect a lead and threaten on the counter. Like Surridge is intended to do. He'll surely be allowed to leave now.
Saw Navas has fallen through, probs for the best.

How does it work with the 25 man squad business at this time? When the first window closes you have to name a squad and then can then only use players named but is that forgotten about when the window opens again?
Eg. can we only play Scarpa because he's replaced Bade in the squad or is January just a mad free for all when everyone can play whoever they like for a month before renaming a 25 man squad in February? The whole rule seems a bit of a shambles.

The whole rule seems a bit of a shambles. I think you guessed right, there's effectively no squad limit while the transfer window is open. Or teams can deregister/register whoever they want until it closes so long as they maintain the homegrown player ratios. Main point is to stop the stockpiling of players by richer clubs. So we'll end up paying £15m for 31 year-old Wood. Plus his £60k pw wages. When you see the likes of Everton and West Ham struggling to raise £10m you have to wonder where this leaves us in the long term.

Reading we're buying Saint-Maximin. Who peddles this nonsense?

I see Lascelles hasn't played much for Newcastle this season. Surely he's worth a look?

Does anyone know what the loan rules definitely are? I think it's that we can only loan out a maximum of 8 players over 21 and that we can only loan two PL players at anyone time
If both are true then that would mean i) any more outgoings would need to be permanent unless we recall/sell any of our loaned out players ii) we couldn't loan anyone else from another PL club

I think you can only register two players on loan from English clubs at any time and a maximum of 4 for the season. So that would be Wood and Hendo.
I see we're being linked with every high profile player considering a move, just like in the summer. Its all noise generated by agents to drum up demand. Our squad is nicely balanced now, barring more injuries and possibly a winger to replace Dennis.

Where does he fit in? Not sure really what to make of this. Got a good mate that is a Newcastle fan, he let me know earlier and now being banded about on SSN etc. Says he has been injured most of season. But when Howe cam in and shuffled the pack Shelvey was one of fittest players out the lot. Still can ping ridiculous passes with very good vision and obviously adds some bite in the middle. Wouldn't necessarily say he is going to be a starter every week and hopefully he stays away from injury but could see him playing an important role in staying up, in the dressing room, on the training pitch and on matchday winning the ball and pinging some very nice passes quickly to our create players could for quite nicely? I see it as the replacement for colback with a better passing range, a bit more comfortable a few yards higher up the pitch and couple years younger, plenty prem experience top

Thanks for that summary, do need to strengthen our bench as we saw against United. Hopefully injuries have not made him too rusty. Don’t want another Lingard on our hands.
